We kicked off BYOD in Mrs. Lindsey's class based on what the students said they wanted to improve upon. Through a candid class discussion, the students shared honestly about their struggle to turn in assignments on time, completing projects, and doing homework which is a true struggle for middle school students. Many of the students would rather NOT write in their agenda and papers get "lost a lot". "I forget to bring it home" or "It's a lot to write down" were two of the things the students shared with us when we asked them about why they don't get work done on time. They were so honest with us and by 8th grade, the students really know themselves and their work habits. So, we set up a plan with their ideas to find a better way!
First, we modeled how to use the camera on their cell phone to take photos of more than just selfies. They have promised to try taking pictures of their homework, project sheets, or vocabulary on the board, especially the things that may get lost. Next, we reviewed LOTS of free planner apps. We settled on 24Me and the students LOVE it! It allows them to set a reminder when they get home to do their work or remember something they have to bring back to school. They can enter due dates for their homework, tests, study guides and the best part is... it's working! While I can honestly say they weren't too excited about it when we had our first brainstorming session, three weeks later was a different story.
The students were all smiles when I stopped by class after our implementation. Mrs. Davis, "I remembered to turn in my work!" was the response I got when I asked how BYOD was going. One student told me, "I really like getting the reminder at night so I will remember." I will take those smiles all day long, BYOD is a better way for these students! We can't wait to take on the next challenge!
We have moved on to Google Classroom setting goals for grades. Future is bright for these 8th graders!
