Can students be on their 3G/4G network?
While on school grounds, students should be on the WAKE-BYOD network.
Can students text or use their cell phone on the school wireless network?
The contract clearly states that personal texting and phone calls are not permitted. Teachers will move around the room monitoring the use of devices. If students choose not to follow expectations, privileges will be revoked. May result in Admin referral.
Can students bring portable chargers?
No, students devices should come to school fully charged. If your cell phone loses it charge during class, you will have opportunities to use a school owned device.
What happens if my device is damaged, lost or stolen while at school?
BYOD is not a requirement so you can choose to leave your device at home. RMS is not liable for damage, loss or theft of personal property. School Administration will investigate the issue and follow student conduct policy if needed. Students take full responsibility of their devices. Personal technology should not be left unlocked in the locker room or left in a classroom unattended.
How is BYOD going to be useful for students and teachers?
BYOD allows for students to learn the way they live. BYOD is available to students to support learning, enhance instruction, and provide the best possible outcome for students learning. BYOD supports our school mission statement.
How will my child's behavior online in class be monitored? Teachers will be responsible to ensure that students are on task during a BYOD lesson just as they are with any lesson. Teachers will be moving around the room during these lessons. Students who are not on task will be held accountable just as they are without devices.
Can I make changes to the BYOD agreement before I sign it?
No. The agreement is only accepted as written. You can choose to leave your personal device at home and you will have opportunities to use a school owned device.
What devices can I use for BYOD?
RMS defines "devices" as privately owned wireless and portable electronic devices that can be used for wireless Internet access, word processing, image/video capture, sound recording, and information transmitting. Cell phones, tablets, and laptops are all examples of devices.
Is an iPod touch or an older smartphone useful as a BYOD device?
Yes. Any privately owned wireless capable device can be used.
Can I share my device with my friend in another class?
No. Students should not use other student's devices.
Can the teachers "fix" or "repair" my child's device at school? No. Teachers will ask your child to return the device to their locker if it is not functioning properly and the student will be offered opportunities to use a school owned device. Teachers will have a "Hands Off" policy when it comes to repairing student devices.
How will my child keep his/her device safe when not in use? The teachers will implement a procedure, just like they have for other routines, where devices will be put away or in the locker when not in use. Teachers will keep doors locked when they are not in the classroom. It is the student's responsibility to have their device with them at all times or locked in a locker (Hall or PE).
Do I need to download any apps?
Most teachers will be using web-based applications during instruction. This allows students to bring ANY type of device. Teachers may ask students to download the Google Apps which are free on any personal device.
Will I be required to join social media sites?
No.
What happens if I don't have a device or I don't want to bring my device to school?
BYOD is NOT a requirement at RMS. Teachers are designing instruction that is collaborative in nature and school-owned devices will be used to supplement if needed.
What happens if I left my device at home?
You will not be allowed to call home and parents cannot "drop off" a device for a student who left the device at home.
